This vintage snare drum has a one ply maple shell 16 ½” diameter x 14” deep. It came to us with these hoops, ears, snare strainer, and snare gut, as well as the art and tack design you see in the photos. We’ve added new goatskin heads and new natural hemp rope, and did some light repair and cleaning. We assembled it with no muffler to accentuate the vintage skin head sound – this drum cannot use modern synthetic heads due to the diameter. It does not have a carry hook (one could be added).

There are several pencil markings inside the shell, the oldest attributed to William Morris Jr. on 57 Church Street in New Haven CT, 1892 and again in 1893. There is no maker’s label in this shell. The New Haven CT directory in 1892 listed a William Morris Jr. as a bookkeeper at 57 Church St, and William Morris (assumed to be Sr.) at that address with a livery stable. In 1893, “William Morris Jr. of New Haven” was elected secretary/treasurer of the Connecticut Fife & Drum Corps Assn.
